Asya's Happiness
Predominantly cast with non-professional actors, Konchalovsky's second feature centres on Asya (Iya Savvina), a pregnant woman who is a member of an impoverished farm collective battling poverty, disorder and each other.
A bleak, exquisitely shot portrait of rural life, Asya's Happiness provides a subtle yet highly critical vision of the distant and indifferent governmental bureaucracy that controls the collective's existence.
Originally suppressed by Soviet authorities, the film was finally released in 1988 to widespread acclaim.
