Farewells
In Wojciech Has' second full-length feature, social conventions and the Nazi invasion divide bourgeois-born Pawel (Tadeusz Janczar) and his bohemian lover, Lidka.
When war breaks out, Pawel is sent to Auschwitz and Lidka marries his cousin. An intimate psychological portrait, the film's real theme is the structure of time, and the way nothing remains unchanged by its relentless progression.
Adapted from a novel by Stanislaw Dygat, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Has, the film won the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1959 Locarno International Film Festival.
