A political thriller that is actually political, Rosi's film follows a plot of government-sanctioned right-wing killing squads targeting a series of high-profile victims.

Described by Acquarello (Strictly Film School) as "perhaps Francesco Rosi's most pointed and incisive social examination of the widespread instability, scandal, injustice, and corruption of (then) contemporary postwar politics," the film stars Lino Ventura as the investigating protagonist, with Alain Cuny, Fernando Rey and Max von Sydow adding colourful appearances.
