Lola Montès
Ophüls' legendary virtuosic last work, his first in colour, is one of the greatest and most visionary of widescreen films.
Montès (Martine Carol), a courtesan who is ultimately forced to sell kisses in a New Orleans circus, is the epitome of the director's fatally romantic oeuvre. The film was a key influence on directors Baz Luhrmann, Jacques Demy (who dedicated Lola to Ophüls) and Martin Scorsese, and is critic Andrew Sarris' favourite film.
With Anton Walbrook, Peter Ustinov and Oskar Werner.
