A murderer's son is pushed to violence by fearful memories of his childhood. Borzage's visually dynamic film noir, shot by John L. Russell, uses foreground/background oppositions, rack focus, tight close-ups, shadows and off-axis framing to add an oppressive weight to the film's characters and mood.

Features an amazingly expressive and frightening opening sequence, and a strong cast including Dane Clark, Gail Russell, Lloyd Bridges and Ethel Barrymore.
