Sacred Vandals
This is the third of Hoaas' films to explore the beliefs and obsessions of women on the tiny, mostly abandoned island of Hatoma.
Weaving informal interviews with personal narration, Hoaas documents the exploits of elderly Yasuko and her cousin, whose claims of special communion with the spirit world threaten the authority of the priestess.
Screens with Hoaas shorts At Edge (1981, 22 mins), a kind of ethnographic film on the poet Judith Wright, and Pre-occupied (1985, 23 mins), which explores a woman's decision to have or not to have children.
