The Blood
Pedro Costa, 95 mins, Portugal, 1989, 35mm, B&W

Three teenagers flee some nasty criminals, a dubious uncle and the law. Reminiscent of the films of Nicholas Ray, RKO "B" movies and Charles Laughton's The Night of the Hunter with its nocturnal, dreamlike black and white cinematography, The Blood makes its mark equally as one of the great debuts of '80s European cinema. Imported 35mm print.

Colossal Youth
Pedro Costa, 95 mins, Portugal/France/Switzerland, 2006, 35mm

The third instalment in Costa's ongoing collaboration with the inhabitants of the Fontainhas district of Lisbon, a slum largely populated by immigrants from Cape Verde. This hybrid of fiction and documentary provides a multi-faceted commentary on gentrification, loss, isolation and rejection. Costa follows Ventura, a slum dweller and victim of forced relocation, on his rounds of the city, visiting the people and places that he loves. Imported 35mm print.
