Deep Space: Sensation & Immersion

Afraid? Dont
try to understand. Just believe
Orpheus in conversation with Heurtebise in Jean Cocteaus film Orphée,
1949.
The title of the exhibition Deep
Space: Sensation & Immersion refers to a set of spatial
journeys that have been realised through media such as light, video, film
and digital media. In many of the works the viewer encounters art through
sight, touch, sound, voice and physical movement. The audience is invited
to immerse themselves in the wonder of the spaces, to explore their physical
construction, their digital presence, their filmic pulse and their saturated
expanses of colour and light.
To move in and through space, whether physically or virtually,
is to take a journey. Even if that journey is revolving, dynamic, non-directional,
it is composed of a set of experiences that will in some form affect the
sensations of the person taking it. This exhibition offers visitors a
transformative experience of being immersed in the kinaesthetic, visual,
aural and informational totality of the artworks. The viewer experiences
art through sensation and immersion.
This exhibition of Australian and international works has developed
out of an earlier exhibition entitled Space Odysseys: Sensation &
Immersion held at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, in 2001.
Deep Space combines
many of the installations from the original exhibition along with films
and videos from the collection of the Australian Centre for the Moving
Image. Exploring space, light, time and the journey, the works presented
as part of Deep Space
may be seen in the screen gallery, on the public imaging screens
throughout the building and in the cinema program.
