Morphing the episodic comedy tradition of Laurel and Hardy through a low-budget, Greenwich Village street aesthetic, Brian de Palma's second feature length film is a shambolic 60s counter-culture time capsule peppered with Vietnam draft dodgers, peddlers of smutty movies and someone who says he's Lee Harvey Oswald's landlady's nephew.
De Niro, in one of his earliest roles, is billed first but actually plays the longhaired sidekick who assists his best friend (Jonathan Warden) in flunking his army physical.
