Distant Voices, Still Lives
Terence Davies' debut feature is an evocative and moving rendition of family life in 1940s and 50s Liverpool.
Drawing upon autobiographical elements in the director's personal history, the film divides into two parts.
Distant Voices centres on the wedding of Eileen - the eldest of the three Davies children - and the war-time bombings that terrorized the city.
Still Lives focuses on the family's recollections of an often-domineering father, played out against music and radio programs of the era that are interwoven in such a way as to create a haunting 'movie musical' of modern cinema.
"I'll say it again. This film is a masterpiece" The Guardian
