Donnie Darko

Richard Kelly, 113 mins, USA, 2001.

Donnie (Jake Gyllenhaal), a teenager in the thrall of paranoid schizophrenia, struggles to make sense of the world around him. This story of psychosis is balanced by a parallel narrative of time travel and heroic sacrifice.

This lecture draws out the film's symbolic and interpretative possibilities, guiding students through its complex tapestry of ideas and allusions.

The screening will be of the original theatrical version.
