Water

M
Deepa Mehta, 114 mins, Canada, 2005.

Set in 1930s India, Water explores the plight of Hindu women cast out from mainstream society after the death of their husbands.

The story takes place in the context of Ghandi's vision of an independent India in which all citizens would be equal. The film centres on Chuyia (Sarala Kariyawasam), widowed at eight years of age and condemned to spending the rest of her life in seclusion in a crumbling ashram.

This lecture looks at the way in which Chuyia's lively independence becomes associated with the spirit of renewal sweeping the country.

Particular attention will be given to director Deepa Mehta's treatment of the interrelationship between tradition and change in Indian society and her distinctive use of the central metaphor of water.
