“Of all [Merchant Ivory] collaborations, none has been more graceful, funny, literate or entertaining”

The New York Times

Cross-cutting between the 1920s and early 1980s, James Ivory’s sprawling epic moves effortlessly between modern-day India and the splendours of the Raj.

As Anne (Julie Christie) searches for answers about the mysterious affair between her great-aunt Olivia (Greta Scacchi) and an Indian prince (Shashi Kapoor), she becomes immersed in the Indian culture, and the pull of the past leads her to a clearer view of her own future.

Author and screenwriter Ruth Prawer Jhabvala adapted her own novel for the film. Nominated for nine BAFTAs including Best Film, Best Director and Best Cinematography, Ruth Prawer Jhabvala was awarded the prize for Best Adapted Screenplay.

Premiere screenings of the new digital restoration.
