“A magnificent film”

Tom Volf’s Maria by Callas tells the remarkable life story of the legendary Greek-American soprano in her own voice in surprisingly direct tv interviews, home movies, unpublished memoirs and also through private letters read in the film by American mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.

Concert footage of Callas performing arias from Norma, Carmen and Tosca attest to Callas' extraordinary technical and expressive powers - Leonard Bernstein famously referred to her as ‘the Bible of opera’ – but Volf’s film is also an affecting portrait of the private Callas.
