Sara Driver: NYC

“One of the most compelling, original and regrettably overlooked filmmakers to emerge from the creative maelstrom of downtown New York City”

Paper Magazine

Sara Driver: NYC features Driver's key works as director and producer, including the Australian premiere of her latest documentary, Boom for Real: the Late Teenage Years of Jean-Michel Basquiat.  Few directors could be more centrally placed to the subject and milieu in which Basquiat operated. Driver’s intimate knowledge of New York’s downtown art scene is crucial in offering new insights and genuine sensitivity in her approach to this much mythologized figure in modern art.

While each of her films are stylistically unique, an overarching dream-like quality links the works. The grainy B&W retelling of a moment of psychosis (or clarity) in her adaptation of the Paul Bowles classic, You Are Not I to the surreal hyper-colour of her Chinatown mystery, Sleepwalk; each film puts female characters in centre frame and lends access to a distinctive directorial voice where music, dreams and the everyday coexist in a natural harmony.

Don’t miss this opportunity to dive into a unique vision of New York City and the work of a truly inventive and singular artist.
