“Tarkovsky... moves with such naturalness in the room of dreams”
Few directors cast a shadow as long as the Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky.
To celebrate the digital restoration of his final film The Sacrifice, our Stalking Tarkovsky film season uncovers the auteur's signature dreamlike cinematic language, his inspirations, and the films paying tribute to him today.
Featuring films from his predecessors, Ingmar Bergman, Robert Bresson and Antonioni, and his successors, Claire Denis, Lars von Trier and Carlos Reygadas, the season celebrates the Tarkovskian aesthetic of aching existentialism, bold temporal experimentation and the cinematic sublime.
In his own words, "Perhaps the meaning of all human activity lies in artistic consciousness, in the pointless and selfless creative act? Perhaps our capacity to create is evidence that we ourselves were created in the image and likeness of God?" (Sculpting in Time, 1986)
