Donald Sutherland's cool-headed investigator, John Klute, is on the trail of a man who has disappeared; a reversal of the standard issue cherche la femme motif of earlier films noir.
Bree Daniels (Jane Fonda) turns up among the clues but while Klute is investigating her, the tough-talking, self-proclaimed 'broad' - a call girl who can spin just the right line for every 'john' - is nervously trying to 'find herself' before a trick with a vicious streak does.
