9A rag doll awakens in a post-apocalyptic world menaced by rampaging machines. Punching well above his weight, 9 (Elijah Wood) soon discovers a small band of survivors like himself and convinces the group that, (just as the Gorgonites finally realise in Joe Dante's Small Soldiers), hiding from a fearsome enemy is no longer an option.
Director Shane Acker teamed up with producers including Tim Burton and Timur Bekmambetov (Night Watch, Day Watch) in adapting his UCLA graduating short film project from 2005 into a visually daring feature length animation featuring the voices of Elijah Wood, Chrisopher Plummer, Jennifer Connolly, John C. Reilly and Martin Landau.
Burton collaborator, composer Danny Elfman, contributes a number of musical themes to the film.
