Donnie Darko (2001)
Donnie Darko's awkward teen years are exacerbated by hallucinations that may or may not be related to the fact he has decided to go off his meds. Inexplicable forces appear to be at work when a jet engine falls out of the sky and demolishes Donnie's room while he's out sleepwalking and meets a 6ft rabbit named Frank with some very specific doomsday co-ordinates to impart to the hapless young man.
High school is also taking its toll on Donnie - an impressively good and suitably anguished Jake Gyllenhaal in his breakthrough lead role - without the added pressure of having to decode the workings of time portals between primary and tangent universes and learning how to harness some unexpected fourth dimensional powers. (Hey, it's all there in The Philosophy of Time Travel!)
Richard Kelly's cult hit from 2001 boasts a terrific supporting cast that includes Maggie Gyllenhaal, Katharine Ross, Mary McDonnell, Drew Barrymore and Patrick Swayze.
