Factotum
Matt Dillon plays Hank Chinaski, a skid row writer in downtown L.A. fashioned after Charles Bukowski in a film adapted from the autobiographical novel by the author published in 1975.
Bent Hamer, the Norwegian director of Kitchen Stories (2003) lends a similarly droll, unsentimental worldview to his wry, downbeat drama of a life lived on unconventional terms in the service of a demanding muse.
Dillon is excellent in a committed performance as the hard-living Chinaski, with solid support from Marisa Tomei, Lili Taylor and the late Adrienne Shelly as fellow fringe dwellers.
"An understated and atmospheric portrait of the artist as a young booze-hound built around a quiet but magnetic performance by Matt Dillon" - Film4
