The Holy Mountain
A succès de scandale at the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, Jodorowsky's psychedelically-propelled quest narrative sees the Chilean writer/director follow up his on-screen appearance in El Topo (1971) with a tailor-made role as the allegorically-named Alchemist.
Leading seven characters through a series of bizarre, mystical rituals en route to Lotus Island to ascend the Holy Mountain where they plan to overthrow the ruling deities, Jodorowsky employs a wild excess of sacrilegious imagery, cathartic violence and existential symbolism in his most visually extravagant film.
"A perversely hilarious time capsule. Not even Buñuel with a brainful of Woodstock's bad brown acid could have made something this gloriously screwy." Time Out New York
Restored to all its trippy splendour in a glorious new 35mm print.
