The Passenger (Professione: Reporter)In Antonioni's third English language feature Jack Nicholson plays David Locke, a war correspondent frustrated in the attempt to shoot a documentary in Chad who casually assumes the identity of a dead man (who, rather unhelpfully, turns out to be an arms dealer).
In a performance "played with a stunning admixture of emotional lethargy and sexual heat by Nicholson" (to quote Manohla Dargis' New York Times review) Locke's attempts to run away from himself are repeatedly thwarted by Antonioni's masterful mise en scene and a bravura closing sequence shot by cinematographer Luciano Tovoli.
Maria Schneider (of Last Tango In Paris fame) co-stars.
