The Wolf Man
The Wolf Man
Universal's 1941 classic (recently revived in a big-budget remake with Benicio del Toro in the lead role) set the template for the werewolf genre.

Horror/sci-fi-meister Curt Siodmark's inspired screenplay effectively weaves horror and fantasy elements and the film is further elevated by top-notch atmospherics.

Bela Lugosi (whose star had been set in the Hollywood firmament with roles in Universal's 1931, Tod Browning-directed version of Dracula and 1935 version of The Raven) is here cast as the accursed gypsy who dooms a hapless Welshman, Larry Talbot, (a sympathetic Lon Chaney Jr., unrecognizable in make-up by the legendary Jack Pierce) to reverting to his bestial nature on full moon nights.
