The Topics on Screen screening are designed to assist students to develop understandings about the ways in which film stories help us to make sense of the world and our place within that world. These screen literacy skills assist students to develop an appreciation for the art and craft behind the moving image in its many forms, by developing their ability to think beyond the screen.
During their excursion to ACMI students will be engaged in:
- an introductory session introducing the topic and film language
- a film screening program (see list below).

Early Years
Me and My Special Things (Years Prep-2)
These films promote positive self-esteem and appreciation of the ways people, places and things are special or important to us.
Toys, Technology and Having Fun (Years Prep-2)
These films show how and why toys are important in our lives - across times and cultures.
Families and Family Celebrations (Years Prep-3)
This program will stimulate discussion about what it means to be part of a family, focusing on cultural background, family roles, celebrations, traditions and rituals.
Let Me Entertain You - Going to the Pictures (Years 1-4)
This program screens excerpts and films showing how the telling of film stories in our community has developed and changed over time. It is designed to support a SoSE integrated curriculum unit of work.
Stories from Around the World (Years 3-4)
These film stories are selected to help students understand the key features of narrative structure and the important part that stories play in people's lives throughout the world.
Middle Years
Let's Get Animated! (Years 5-9)
Explore animation from the first animated film to use synchronized sound (Steamboat Willie, 1928) to recent examples of digital animation.
TV Drama Production - Behind the Scenes
Investigate the production of a TV drama series from the original concept through to screening on TV. Note: This includes a short, interactive, group filming activity.
Going to the Flicks - A History of the Moving Image (Years 5-9)
Explore the history of the moving image - from toys and carnival attractions, silent films and talkies, through to digital media.
Screen Texts and Stereotypes (Years 5-9)
Discover how advertisements, television, soapies and films use stereotypes to create meanings.
Exploring Documentary (Years 5-10)
Identify the features of documentary, and think critically about the content. The topic can be negotiated, for example, the environment, Antarctica, history.
Exploring Genre (Years 8-10)
Take a critical look at what you watch. Explore specific genre examples and the ways in which that genre is constructed. Choose from: Action Heroes, Block Buster Films, Chick Flicks, Horror, Anime, Reality TV, Talk Shows, Teen Flicks, TV Soapies.
Who Owns the News? (Years 8-10)
Explore the different emphases and 'spin' placed on news stories by different TV networks.
