The Hollywood Reporter lauded this engaging documentary as "a spirited riposte to the groundless cliché that Los Angeles is a cultural wasteland". Indeed, while Abstract Expressionism held sway on the East Coast, Beat-era Los Angeles became the locus for an energetic group of artists, curators and collectors.
Their ambition, talent and endeavours may not have received the same attention as their New York counterparts (though the likes of Andy Warhol and Marcel Duchamp certainly knew what they were up to) but they were critical in the development of a uniquely vital concurrent art scene. Narrated by Jeff Bridges.
"
The Cool School will make you wish that arts documentaries could always be this, well, cool!"
