The Magician
Director and star Scott Ryan turns in a scorching film trailing the life of a hitman.
Low-fi and lean, this 'documentary' of the world of small-time gun-for-hire Ray Shoesmith is all sinew.
Ryan brings a lovely depth to Ray's character, whose twisted code of ethics is, in equal parts, loathsome and likable.
Most outstanding though are the sensational performances throughout which lend the work a sense of authenticity, menace, humour and, suprisingly, great innocence.
There's a lot to like in both story and style and an obvious sense of great fun being had by all.
