God, Your River is Tainted
In what was his last and most financially successful film, Kapoor returns to his crusading social message dramas.
Highlighting the endemic corruption within Indian society, he uses the state of the Ganges as a metaphor for his country's decline.
The male lead Narendra, played by Kapoor's son Rajiv, flees his politically corrupt home of Calcutta for the more pristine headwaters of the Ganges, falling in love and marrying Ganga (Mandakini). When he is recalled home, Narendra makes an unfulfilled promise to return and Ganga must make the perilous journey to Calcutta to find him.
