Guy Maddin Selects

After the success of Jaws, the Toho film studio approached Nobuhiko Obayashi to craft a script that would have teenage appeal. He famously consulted his daughter for storylines and delivered them in the wildly inventive House.

Pretty schoolgirl Gorgeous is excited about the upcoming summer holiday with her father, but when he returns from Italy with a new wife, she is crushed.

Seeking solace in her estranged aunt, she journeys to her mountain home to holiday with best friends - Prof, Melody, Kung Fu, Mac, Sweet and Fantasy. But all is not what it seems in this house full of supernatural traps.

This Japanese cult classic, which has been described as Scooby Doo as directed by Dario Argento, has it all - demonic house cats, evil spirits, homicidal pianos and more!

"Delirious, deranged, gonzo or just gone, baby, gone - no single adjective or even a pileup does justice to House." - New York Times

Guy Maddin has nominated House as an ideal screening companion for Keyhole.
