Old Joy
Starring indie rocker Will Oldham, Kelly Riechardt's critically acclaimed road movie is a richly textured account of the irretrievability of the past.
Mark (Daniel London), an expectant father, receives a call from his estranged friend, Kurt (Oldham), who asks him to venture into the Oregon wilderness in an attempt to reconnect.
Both Oldham and London give superb performances, particularly Oldham as the freewheeling thirty-something who is incapable of coming to grips with his waning relationship with his friend. Saturated with glorious images and punctuated by a mesmerising soundtrack from indie rock stalwarts Yo La Tengo, their languid journey makes for poignant, memorable cinema.
