Forbidden Planet
A potent blend of science fiction, Shakespeare and Freud, Forbidden Planet takes the premise of The Tempest and fashions it into a speculative fantasy about the darker regions of the human psyche. Aside from its outstanding use of matte painting backdrops, the film has been cited as the original inspiration for Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek.
When an all-male crew land on the 'forbidden planet', they discover its only inhabitants are the iconic 'Robby the Robot', the mysterious Dr. Morbius and his beautiful, innocent daughter. When the female-starved crew begin to express interest in the young woman, a deadly creature materialises, endangering all of their lives.
Forbidden Planet boasts a memorable all-electronic musical score and some impressive special effects (which earned the film an OscarĀ® nomination). The film's main 'id' monster was created by veteran Disney animator Joshua Meador.
