Aside from its outstanding use of matte painting backdrops, the film has been cited as the original inspiration for Gene Roddenberry's Star Trek.
When an all-male crew land on the 'forbidden planet', they discover its only inhabitants are the iconic 'Robby the Robot', the mysterious Dr. Morbius and his beautiful, innocent daughter. When the female-starved crew begin to express interest in the young woman, a deadly creature materialises, endangering all of their lives.
Forbidden Planet boasts a memorable all-electronic musical score and some impressive special effects (which earned the film an Oscar® nomination). The film's main 'id' monster was created by veteran Disney animator Joshua Meador.
