Focus On Claudia Cardinale season.
In a village in Tuscany in the immediate post-war, Mara (Cardinale) falls in love with a former partisan, Bube (George Chakiris, from
West Side Story); on the run after being implicated in a politically motivated crime.
While Bube's friends plan his escape over the border, Mara finds work in a local town and meets a young man, Stefano, who offers her a fresh start. When Bube is arrested, Mara's loyalties are tested.
Cardinale earned a coveted
Nastro D'Argento (Silver Ribbon) prize for Best Actress at Italy's annual film awards for the role, in which she transforms from a coquettish country girl to a resolute and heroic figure.
Luigi Comencini's film was also the first starring role for the actress in which (following Fellini's good example in
8 ½) Italian audiences heard Cardinale deliver her lines in her own voice (that is, without being dubbed).
The film screened in competition at the Berlin Film Festival, where Cardinale was more recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Golden Bear award in 2002.
