A Girl in Australia (Bello, onesto, emigrato Australia sposerebbe compaesana illibata)
Claudia Cardinale and comedy great Alberto Sordi (I Vitelloni) were superstars in Italy by the time they travelled to Broken Hill - and other more picturesque Oz locations - to co-star in this under-appreciated Italo-Australian comedy.
Zampa's film affectionately spoofs Southern European stereotypes while astutely tapping a sense of the good-natured bemusement with which Anglo-Australians regarded the 'new arrivals' in their midst.
Sordi takes the role of Amedeo, a jocular Italian migrant working as a telephone linesman in a dusty outback town. He includes a photo of a more handsome friend with a written marriage proposal to Carmela (Cardinale) who promptly accepts, flying out of Rome at breakneck speed to join him in Australia despite having a few secrets of her own.
Cardinale was awarded the David di Donatello (Italian Oscar) for Best Actress for her terrific turn in this irresistible bi-cultural charmer.
