It's 1944 and a newly conjured demon child has crossed into this world via a portal the Nazis are aiming to exploit to their sinister ends.
Hellboy (the marvellous Ron Perlman) grows up under the wise tutelage of Broom, learns to temper more destructive traits encoded in his monster DNA and sides with humanity in the struggle against dark forces in the universe. He's also a complete sucker for kitty cats (!) and carries a torch (ahem!) for a young 'firestarter', Liz (Selma Blair), still struggling to harness her own particular super-human faculties.
Del Toro collaborated closely with Mike Mignola, the creator of the Hellboy graphic comic, but fittingly refers to his irresistibly entertaining movie as "its own creature".
