Mimic

Del Toro's first U.S. produced feature engendered a clash of artistic wills with the formidable Bob and Harvey Weinstein (Miramax) who bankrolled the environmental horror film about a mutant breed of insects that wreak their own form of genetic revenge on the human residents of Manhattan.

Despite the film's fraught genesis, Mimic features a number of set pieces that the director considers among his most accomplished, including the subway abduction of Dr Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino) and an unexpectedly discomfiting scene involving a child who breaks into a basement.

Though not a film that del Toro would nominate as closest to expressing his own highly developed style, Mimic is nevertheless an accomplished and suspenseful hybrid horror sci-fi.
