Donkey Skin
Based on a 17th Century fairytale, Catherine Deneuve is the luminous central figure around which other characters orbit. She appears in dual roles, as both mother/queen and daughter/princess, unequivocally reinforcing the primacy of her screen presence.

The beguiling visual charm of Demy's musicals are typically permeated by darker emotional currents; so it is that Deneuve's princess must challenge an unsettling edict issued by the King, her father (Jean Marais), and reconcile the conflicting obligations of filial love and duty.

New 35mm print.
