The fabulist films of Chilean-born, French-based Ruiz typically confound narrative stability and he certainly takes to the task with zeal in this terrific, genre-skewering murder mystery.
Of Catherine Deneuve's performance in Ruiz's cerebral comedy, film critic Adrian Martin writes: "Deneuve is her best implacable 'sleepwalker' self, gliding into a strange world of identities swapped, doubled and forgotten that has the charged décor of Hitchcock's
Rebecca and
Marnie".
Ruiz's sophisticated satire also stars Michel Piccoli, Melvil Poupaud (
A Summer's Tale,
Le Divorce) and Mathieu Amalric (
Kings and Queen).
