Catherine Deneuve's second film with Truffaut marked her first screen pairing with Gerard Depardieu.
Truffaut biographer Don Allen refers to
The Last Metro as the director's "homage" to Deneuve.
To the director's credit, his casting of Deneuve as "an erotic ideal" - married to a Jewish theatre-owner forced to go into hiding - doesn't overly distract from the film's WWII Vichy France setting.
