Repulsion
Roman Polanski achieves the disquieting effect of distorting Catherine Deneuve's startling beauty in his (and Deneuve's) English language debut.

Repulsion is a paranoid horror set in '60s London that couldn't be less concerned with the free-wheeling zeitgeist of the times.

Polanski instead focuses on an increasingly claustrophobic and unstable filmic space as Carol (Deneuve) retreats further into disassociation and psychosis.

"Repulsion is central to that vital, pop modernist moment in world cinema that has left a lasting legacy in experimental and horror-thriller sectors alike" Adrian Martin, BIFF 2001
