The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Winner of the Cannes Palme d'Or, Catherine Deneuve's incandescent loveliness infuses every frame of Jacques Demy's enchanting '60s musical.

Young lovers Genevieve (Deneuve) and Guy (Nino Castelnuovo) are separated when Guy's call to military service sees him despatched to Algeria: a parting which transforms the film into a bittersweet reverie on the nature of absence, memory and loss.

Sublimely scored by Michel Legrand, Demy's meticulously assembled confection is graced with the most ravishing production design.

Though the lovers' youthful abandon gradually gives way to a more pragmatic maturity, few movie musicals have rendered the emotional lives of their protagonists with more exquisite resonance and charm.

New 35mm print.
