My Own Private Idaho
The Honey I'm Home season closes with our annual memorial screening of Gus Van Sant's indie classic, dedicated to actor River Phoenix who died in 1993.
Mike (River Phoenix) and Scott (Keanu Reeves) are hustlers on the streets of Portland.
Scott is the sexually ambivalent son of the city's mayor. His low-rent Midnight Cowboy phase is no more than a calculated rebellion, before he takes up his birthright of a life filled with social prestige.
Mike's path is less clear. A sensitive, gay, narcoleptic who nurses a deep sense of maternal abandonment, Mike's fortunes in life rely far more precariously on the kindness - or otherwise - of all too random strangers.
Udo Kier, James Russo and Grace Zabriskie co-star in a hauntingly rambling road-trip that takes Mike and Scott from the seedy backstreets of Portland to the piazzas of Rome, in a scene that tips its hat to Pasolini, in their search for a place to call home.
