| Film still from Mad Dog Morgan, 1976, ACMI Collection/Cinema Papers Collection. |
Leaving Hollywood1969 saw the release of Dennis Hopper's directorial debut, Easy Rider. This radical, counter-culture film broke all taboos, created a huge sensation, and became a symbol of the peace and love generation. Starring Dennis Hopper, Jack Nicholson and Peter Fonda, the film also included appearances by pop music producer Phil Spector and West Coast Beat Generation figures Wallace Berman and George Herms.
While shooting Easy Rider, Hopper discovered Taos, New Mexico, a place that later became his home for 15 years. His journey away from the Hollywood studios also saw Hopper make a number of films outside of America. His rebel image made him the perfect actor to play the infamous Australian bushranger Daniel Morgan in Philippe Mora's Mad Dog Morgan (1976), which was filmed in Victoria; and he is instantly recognisable as the crazy photo-journalist in Francis Ford Coppola's Apocalypse Now (1979), filmed in the Philippines.
