Huppert approached self-confessed Godard aficionado, Hal Hartley, who jumped at the chance to cast her in one of his deadpan, absurdist films.
Huppert plays an ex-nun trying to write marketable pornography while waiting for a meaningful vocation in life to reveal itself.
She stumbles across Martin Donovan - an amnesiac who may have been a vicious pornographer - and becomes embroiled in his search for a past that, in Hartley's skilled hands, plays out as equal parts old-fashioned screwball comedy, hard-bitten thriller and post-modern romance.
