A disarmingly self-possessed nine year old boy, Camille (Nils Hugon), disturbs the subdued atmosphere of an elegant but rather low key birthday celebration by announcing that his 'real' mother lives elsewhere.
Ariane (Huppert) initially indulges her precocious son's flight of fantasy, but begins to betray signs of discomposure when a woman, Isabelle, (Jeanne Balibar) enters the fray and attests to the boy's version of the truth.
