Inspired by Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s (notably Douglas Sirk's
All That Heaven Allows), director François Ozon assembles the crème de la crème au feminin of French cinema and strands them in a snowbound mansion in which a murder has just been committed.
Huppert is cast as prim spinster Augustine, but holds her own in the glamour stakes - in a cast that includes the magisterial Catherine Deneuve in full Lana Turner mode - before the film's denouement.
