| Michael Cimino's Heaven's Gate |
The reputation of Cimino's monumentally staged western, notorious for its budget overruns and original theatrical release in a mercilessly truncated form, has justly been rehabilitated in recent years, and screens in the restored 225 minute director's cut in glorious Panavision.
Set in 1890s Wyoming, the film pits Kris Kristofferson's idealistic lawman against Christopher Walken's hired gun, and places Isabelle Huppert, then practically unknown to American audiences, squarely between them. Vilmos Zsigmond's cinematography is nothing short of sublime.
