Nelly (Huppert) is married to a hapless advertising exec, Andre, (Guy Marchand) whose heavy-handed attempts to rein in his restless paramour only serve to deepen his dissatisfied wife's resolve to skulk away to a cheap hotel with swaggering gadabout Loulou (Gerard Depardieu).
Pialat's unsentimental, yet deeply authentic, film was drawn from the life of co-writer Arlette Langman, more recently Philippe Garrel's writing collaborator on
Le vent de la nuit (Focus on Catherine Deneuve, 2005) and
Les Amants Reguliers.
