In his seventh on-screen collaboration with Huppert, Chabrol explores the nature of perversity, good and evil within the domain of family.

Mika (Huppert) re-marries a man, Andre (Jacques Dutronc), years after their first brief union. In Lausanne they meet a young woman, Jeanne, who displays an uncanny resemblance to Andre and is deeply intent on uncovering secrets in her past.

Chabrol borrows from Charlotte Armstrong's novel, The Chocolate Cobweb, overlaying the plot with Hitchcockian suspense and thriller elements.
