Chabrol based his film, one of his most unflinchingly polemical dramas, on the true-life case of Marie-Louise Giraud - a working-class Frenchwoman who kept home and hearth together during the Occupation by working as a backyard abortionist.
The full force of the law was brought down upon Giraud, played with characteristic stoicism by Huppert as both resolute and unrepentant in the face of the moral hypocrisy of the Vichy government.
The Venice Film Festival awarded Huppert the Volpi Cup for Best Actress.
