Dogtown and Z-Boys
Watch a seminal doco about the birth of skate culture, then mix it up in a sound and video scratch session with DJ Wasabi.
Dogtown and Z-Boys (Stacy Peralta, 90 mins, USA, 2001) documents the formation of the Zephyr Skating Team, or Z-Boys, whose fluid, surf-inspired skating style came to dominate early skateboarding.
Dogtown was the name of a rundown area of Santa Monica and Venice Beach in the early 1970s, with a legacy of outlaw surfing. Dogtown and Z-Boys is the story of a group of accidental revolutionaries, gifted kids who inadvertently inspired an American pop culture phenomenon.
Following the film screening, discover video turntablism with DJ Wasabi whose skills have seen him support the likes of Redman & Method Man, DJ Craze, Mixmaster Mike, EPMD and Arrested Development. He's also the official tour DJ for Oz hip-hop acts Mantra (Obese), Combat Wombat (Elefant Traks), Bad Boys Batacuda and Jamima Jonez.
