Bride Flight

Dutch director Ben Sombogaart returns with an impressive and compelling drama set in the recent past.

The film is inspired by real events - the Last Great Air Race from London to Christchurch in 1953, which was won by a KLM aircraft carrying 26 young Dutch women on their way to join their fiances already settled in New Zealand.

It tells the story of three young women, Marjorie, Ada and Jewish Esther, who during the flight forge a friendship. On their arrival, they part ways to a start their new lives, yet their paths continue to cross.

Country girl Ada is headed to the West Coast to join a husband she hardly knows, sensible Marjorie is desperate to start a family as soon as she's married, and outgoing Esther, who lost her entire family in the Holocaust, is determined to avoid settling down.

But it is not until they reunite 50 years later, at the funeral of another fellow passenger, that we realise just how intertwined their lives have been.
